中・高 Week 11-1: What subject do you like? 　好きな教科は何ですか？（前）

今回は生徒たちにとって極めて身近な話題、「教科」について話します。話題が身近な場合は、「仕掛け」は比較的簡単になります。前編の今回はシンプルに、リズム良くやれるSmall Talkを紹介します。

【展開例】　太字部分の質問は、ペアでお互いに質問させます。

T: You learn various subjects in school, such as math, Japanese, English, social studies, science and PE, physical education. What subject do you like the best?



– What subject do you like the best? Why?



T: S1, what subject do you like the best?

S1: I like science the best.

T: Why? Why do you like science the best?

S1: Why? Hmm, I just like it.

T: O.K. How about your partner? What subject does he like the best?

S1: He likes English the best.

T: Why does he like English the best.

S1: He likes English because he loves English songs.

What subject do you like the best? という質問は生徒にとって、使い慣れた、全く負荷のかからないものなのですが、それによって生じるやりとり、つまり教科の内容について話すことは、生徒たちにとって意味あることです。好きな教科、得意でない教科について考えることは、自分自身を考えることにつながるからです。

多くの場合、There’s no accounting for tastes. の言葉どおり、「なぜ好きか？」という質問は実は答えづらいものです。S1のように答えられる生徒は実際にはほとんどいません。生徒が答えに詰まっている場合は教師側がYou just like it? などとフォローしてやる必要があるでしょう

T: Now, what subject do you find difficult?



— What subject do you find difficult?



T: S2, what subject do you find difficult?

S2: I find math difficult.

T: How about your partner? What subject does she find difficult?

S2: She says she finds science difficult.

これまでにも触れてきているとおり、第５文型の文、とくにfindを用いた文は、実際のコミュニケーションの中で「使って」、定着を図る必要があります。好き嫌いについて話すときはそのチャンスです。今回は内容も身近なものなので、生徒たちは抵抗なくfindを使ってやりとりをしてくれると思います。

Now, what subject do you find easy? I hope you have some subjects which you find easy.



– What subject do you find easy?



T: S3, what subject do you find easy?

S3: No subject is easy. I find no subject easy.

T: O.K. What subject does your partner find easy?

S3: She finds math easy.

T: That’s great. I don’t find math easy. Actually, I find math very difficult.

今度は最後の単語を変えただけの質問をさせてみました。findを用いた文をより多く使わせたいこと、談話の流れとして自然であることを考慮した判断です。

Small Talkはこの「談話としての自然さ」を重要視する活動です。展開を考えるときには大いに頭を悩ませられる部分ですね。生徒が英語で話していることを忘れるぐらいの自然なSmall Talkをしたいものです。教師としての力の見せどころですね。

今回は、シンプルな展開を紹介しました。先生方なら、「教科」をめぐってどのようなやりとりをすることを考えますか？　次回は、これらのやりとりにさらに多くのことを加えた展開を紹介します。
