“Hands-on Small Talk” スモールトーク【小･中学校編】W17-2： “What do you want to try in the new term?” 「新学期、何をやってみる？」（後）

前回から、“What do you want to try in the new term?” 「新学期、何をやってみる？」をテーマにした Small Talk の展開を考えています。

小・中学校W17-1： “What do you want to try in the new term?” 「新学期、何をやってみる？」（前）

そして、指導者による “What do you want to try [enjoy] in the new term?” という問いの意味を理解し、”I want to try ～.” や “I want to enjoy ～.” などの基本的な答え方を確認する場面を見てきました。それらは既習の語句や表現を用いることに配慮しながら、小学校段階から行うことができます。

では少し学年を上げて中学生になれば、次第に「指導者とのやり取りや、生徒同士のやり取り（「話すこと [やり取り]」）を通して想起した語句や表現」を、今度は「話すこと [発表]」の領域の言語活動としても生かすことができます。

以下の指導者と生徒（S1）のやり取りでは、まず、指導者が「自分のこと」について生徒に伝え、そこから S1 へと問いかけています。

T: I want to start a new exercise this term. I want to try jogging in the morning. How about you, S1? What do you want to try or enjoy in this term? （私は今学期新しい運動を始めたいです。朝、ジョギングをしたい。あなたはどうですか、S1さん。今学期どのようなことに挑戦したい、あるいは楽しみたいですか？）

これに S1 が答えます。指導者は、後に S1 が「発表」の言語活動、すなわちスピーチを行えるように、様々な情報を引き出す問いを工夫しながら続けます。

S1: I practice tennis.（テニスの練習）

T: You want to practice tennis? Do you play tennis in a club? Do you belong to the tennis club?（テニスを練習したいのですね。何かクラブに入っていますか？テニス部に入っていますか？）

S1: Yes.（はい）

T: You’re a member of the tennis club. Have you played tennis for a long time?（テニス部に入っているんですね。長い間、テニスをやっているんですか？）

S1: … Six year.（６年）

T: Wow, you have played tennis for six years!  Did you start playing tennis in elementary school?（わぁ、６年間もテニスをしてきたのですか。小学校でテニスを始めたんですか？）

S1: Yes.（そうです）

T: Are you good at playing tennis?（テニスは上手なのですか）

S1: I’m not good at hitting a ball.（ボールを打つのが上手くないです）

T: Well, do you miss the ball? 〔空振りのジェスチャー〕（ボールを逃してしまうんですか？）

S1: No. I hit … not good ball.（いえ … 良いボールが（打てなくて…））

T: So you mean, your balls are easy to hit back? You hit short balls?　〔ボールがあまくなるジェスチャー〕（つまり、あなたの打ったボールは打ち返しやすい。ボールがあまい、ということですね）

S1: Yes.（はい）

T: I see. Is that why you want to practice tennis this term?（わかりました。今学期、あなたがテニスをしたい理由が分かりました）

S1: Yes. I want to practice tennis very hard.（そうです。とても一生懸命練習したいです）

T: Good luck. But it’s very hot to play tennis in summer. Is it too hot to practice outside?（頑張ってくださいね。でも夏にテニスをするのは本当に暑いですね。外で練習するには暑くて無理なのでは）

S1: Yes. I … sun burnt.（はい… 日焼けしました）

T: Yes, you got suntanned.（日焼けしたんですね）

S1: It’s cool now. I can practice tennis longer.（今は涼しいので、長い間テニスができます）

T: You’re right. It should be a much better season for tennis players.（そうですよね。テニスをする人々には、とても良い時期になっていますね。）

こうしたやり取りを経験した S1 は、次のような「発表」を行うことができそうです。ほとんど上の指導者とのやり取りの中で復習した表現となっています。生徒の役割は、やり取りの中で音声として入ってきた英語を、分かりやすく整理された形でまとめることができ、さらに様々な情報をどのように組立てるべきかを意識して全体を見渡すことが大切です。

S1: I want to practice tennis hard. I’m a member of the tennis club. I started playing tennis when I was six years old. So, I’ve played tennis for more than six years.　In summer, it was too hot to practice tennis outside for a long time. Look. I got suntanned. But now, it’s getting cooler and we can enjoy tennis more. I’m not good at hitting good balls. I have to practice more.（テニスを一生懸命練習したいです。私はテニスクラブに入っています。６歳の時にテニスを始めました。だからもう６年以上になります。夏は暑すぎるので、屋外でテニスを長時間することができません。ほら、日焼けしました。でも今は、少しずつ涼しくなっているので、もっとテニスを楽しむことができます。良いノールを打つのが苦手なので、もっと練習しなければ。）

＊構文や文法事項の習得状況にもよりますが、中学校段階で “What do you want to try [enjoy] in the new term?” という問いに「まとまった文章」で答える「発表」のモデルをいくつか挙げてみました。生徒にモデルとして提示する表現をバラエティとしてもっておくことが、指導者には求められます。

① I want to enjoy the school trip. I usually go on a trip with my family. It’s my first time to spend all day and night with my classmates. I want to enjoy talking a lot of things with them. Also, I wanted to visit ABC museum for a long time. I’m very much looking forward to learning about the history of Teddy Bears! （修学旅行を楽しみたいです。旅行に行くのはたいてい家族と一緒です。昼も夜もクラスの友だちと過ごすのは、これが初めてです。たくさんのことを話して楽しみたいです。また、私はABC博物館を長い間訪れてみたかったのです。テディベアの歴史について学ぶのがとても楽しみです。）

② I want to enjoy reading many [more] books. I like reading books, especially picture books. The amount of text in a picture book is very small, but it has many beautiful pictures. I find it interesting to understand find how those pictures are linked with each simple phrase. Every picture book has its own message. The more I read picture books, the more I got attracted to them. And fall is the best season for reading.（たくさん[もっと]読書を楽しみたいです。私は本を読むのが好きです。特に絵本が。絵本に含まれる本文はとても少ないですが、多くの美しい絵があります。それらの絵が、それぞれの簡潔なフレーズにどのように関連づいているのかを理解するのがおもしろいです。絵本には、それぞれメッセージがあります。絵本を読めば読むほど、魅了されます。そして、秋は読書に最適な季節です。）

③ I want to try learning French. I enjoy learning English very much. It’s wonderful to use English to communicate with somebody who doesn’t speak Japanese. But I have still some difficulty in listening and writing. I have to study English more. On the other hand, I like the sound of the French language. So I decided to start learning French during summer break and bought some textbooks. I haven’t even read a single page, but will start soon!（フランス語の勉強に挑戦してみたいです。私は英語を学ぶのがとても好きです。日本語を話さない人とコミュニケーションするために英語をもちいるのは素晴らしいです。でも私はまだ「聞くこと」と「描くこと」が苦手です。英語をもっと勉強しなくてはなりません。その一方で、私はフランス語の音が好きです。だから夏休みの間に、フランス語を勉強しようと決心し、教科書を何冊か購入しました。まだ１ページさえ読んでいませんが、そろそろ始めます！）

④ I want to take an English exam. I want to know how high my English (proficiency) level is. I’m not good at listening comprehension. So, I’ll make it a rule to listen to English CDs for at least 30 minutes every day. I want to pass the 3rd Grade by the end of this term. （英語の試験を受けてみたいです。自分の英語レベルがどれくらいかを知りたいからです。私は聴解が苦手なので、毎日少なくとも30分英語のCDを聞くことにします。今学期終わりには３級に合格したいです。）
